About this Event

Two Approaches to Drawing workshop led by Dave Van Patten and Kashira Edghill

The workshop will feature drawing methods derived from two different parts of the mind.

Dave Van Patten will focus on comic making, character creation and narratives from a conscious, intentional approach.

Kashira Edghill will focus on creating quick and expressive Rorschach style drawings, allowing participants to interpret their own meaning from the settled images, in an improvisational approach.

Dave Van Patten

Dave Van Patten is a Grammy Award winning album artist, illustrator, muralist, and designer from Long Beach CA, best known for his colorful imagery, playful surrealism and humorous tone. With a foundation in comics, Van Patten branched out into large-scale mural work with World Wide Walls (POW!WOW!) in 2016 and 2017, allowing his tiny comic drawings to span across entire buildings.

Since then Van Patten has painted murals throughout Long Beach and around the world. The bulk of his inspiration is pulled from dark humor comics, 1960's surrealism, garage rock/punk albums, and modern societal absurdity.

Kashira Edghill

I'm Kashira Edghill, a painter, sculptor, musician, and filmmaker. I dabble in different mediums including pastel, paint, colored pencils and collage. My work mostly depicts abstractions of people or satirical distortions of traditional scenes. I enjoy trying to elevate something ugly into something beautiful, and taking something plain or common place, only to spike it with disturbing implications. Each piece expressing a different room in my mind.

Compound’s Art For All is a series of hands-on workshops that teach various artistic mediums and encourages a new way of making art that’s fun and engaging for the whole family. You will be able to learn drawing, collage, painting, performance, sculpture, ceramics, music-making, and much more.

Art for All takes place Sundays from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm. Please arrive 30 minutes before the workshop begins to reserve your seat. Reservations are required. Coffee and small breakfast bites will be available to purchase from Union at Compound. Art supplies are provided. No previous art-making experience necessary.

Workshops are free and open to all thanks to this year’s sponsor, The Port of Long Beach, and a donation by The Rudolph J. and Daphne A. Munzer Foundation.
