About this Event

Are you interested in composting? Want to start composting at scale in your community but not sure where to start? Looking for a local solution to your food waste? Join FROGGS (Friends of Garnethill Green Spaces), Cat Train from Propagate & the FCA project to learn how your waste can be used to create healthy, living soil!

We will meet at Garnethill Multicultural Centre at 10am, before walking to Garnethill Community Garden. Unfortunately, we will be using the lounge on the first floor of the multicultural centre which is not wheelchair accessible. A communal lunch at the multicultural centre will be served from 12 - 1pm. More on accessibility below.

At FROGGS' Community Composting Hub, we will explore hot composting, cold composting & composting with worms. Participants will:
- Gain an understanding of multiple methods of community composting
- Examine the connection between climate change & soil health
- Explore our reliance on healthy soils for a healthy food system
- Take part in practical, creative composting activities

Permaculture Practitioner Cat Train from Propogate will guide participants on different tools we can use to examine soil health and ways to improve our soil health through simple practical actions in our composting.
About We're a group interested in making Garnethill as green as possible! We are concerned with developing, maintaining and nurturing the green areas in Garnethill's urban environment. We want to stimulate interest and adoption of sustainable practices and encourage wildlife and biodiversity with the help of the local community.
We host regular events in Garnethill park and in the local gardens. We also have a community garden on Garnethill street - pop round and have a look.
Originally a splinter group from the community council, we have been running since 2016.

About Cat Train: Cat is a professional musician, who believes in the power of music and food to bring people together. Mum to three young home educated wildlings. Qualified Children in Permaculture Practitioner and Permaculture Diploma Apprentice. She runs an outdoor group for children and their parents/carers in the woods. Cat is all about encouraging and supporting people to grow food in public spaces. Cat loves bringing people together and seeing friendships and connections being formed.

We will meet at Garnethill Multicultural Centre at 10am, before walking to Garnethill Community Garden. Unfortunately, we will be on the second floor of the multicultural centre which is not wheelchair accessible.

Composting for the Future is our flagship composting programme running throughout 2024 and 2025. It is a way for us to spark Glasgow’s communities’ involvement in composting and raising awareness of the importance of healthy soils for a healthy climate. Led by the Food and Climate Action project team, we want to work with our partners and communities to identify what needs to change with our city’s current food-waste recycling system, explore alternative models to make composting easier and more effective and support community groups to set these up.
We'll be delivering events across the city as well as sharing and creating materials on the ways and whys of composting.
To keep up to date with our events, follow us on Eventbrite and for everything else you can either sign-up to our newsletter or follow us on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.

Accessibility:

Unfortunately, this event is not wheelchair accessible as it is being held on the 1st floor of the multicultural centre. FROGGS' community garden is on a relatively steep hill. There is a narrow, gravely path. There is a small, wooden shelter at the garden, which is up a step. Some seating is available. The closest bathroom to the garden is the CCA, where there are accessible & gender neutral toilets available.

The event will be informal & relaxed in nature. Participants will be encouraged to take part in practical activities, as well as engage in group discussions. The multicultural centre is well used by groups, so can sometimes be quite busy & loud. FROGGS' communty garden is open to the public at all times, so people who are not taking part in the workshop may also be using the space.

Please leave any details of allergies, or dietary requirements when booking.
