About this Event
Each Composition in the Field class begins with a talk with one of our experienced instructors, and then you and your fellow students take a stroll through one of a variety of photogenic locales (in any of the 20+ cities the DPA encapsulates). There is street photography, magnificent interiors, farmers markets, zoos, landscapes, and more, photos of which are included within. These photos are a mix of student and instructor images in many different venues and cities across the United States and Canada.
You will have fun in the three hour session, learn to shoot strategically, get more interesting photos of the event, and walk away with a foundation to improve your photographs in the future, whether you’re traveling, or at a birthday party and everywhere in between.
From the French Renaissance of the 1890’s, to collegiate gothic, and on to modernist glass structures of the 60’s and 70’s, spend a session on a thorough study of architectural photography. The Tenino Sandstone construction materials of the Denny Hall, and the Theodore Jacobsen Observatory the 2 oldest buildings on the uptown campus were erected in 1895, after the campus was relocated from downtown.
The buildings close up and far off lend themselves to architectural abstractions as well as classic images that are built on the central principles of photography and painting. The interior of the Suzzallo Library and other buildings present photo ops that provide a lesson Leading Lines and ambient lighting.
And there are the statues, vintage and contemporary, freckled throughout the campus, ideal for inanimate portraits in and of themselves or as content to be used for framing and Depth of Field techniques for wider range scenes.
With Mount Rainier in the background Drumheller fountain on campus can be testing material for achieving a variety of visual effects of moving water through various shutter speeds. Macro photography can be employed on the plant life especially during Cherry Blossom season on the Quad.

If leaving a voice mail message is not your thing, please email us at and include the date and city of the class you are considering, as well as your phone number.
