Composition in the Field - Photography Workshop

Your Digital Photo Academy Instructor leads Minneapolis photo workshops to help you understand your camera controls and learn compelling composition strategies.

Construction of the Central Lutheran Church in downtown Minneapolis began in 1919 and continued through 1927, and again as late as 2018, resulting in photo ops for you to leave with portfolio worthy images. Your photo instructor will start with the imposing edifice, the tall gothic tower silhouetted against a dramatic sky, as well as a variety of angles to capture the grandeur of the entire structure. Shutter Speed Controls and Aperture Priority vary according to the time of day, the clouds above and can render a range of sensibilities from vintage to surreal in the final photos.

There will be a Rule of Thirds Composition lesson using the outside steps approaching the pair of massive red wooden doors dwarfed by the surrounding arched architectural moldings.

Enter the sanctuary under the towering vaulted ceilings and star-shaped chandeliers, along with spectacular stained glass windows all along the walls just beneath the ceiling, and your instructor will help you capture the glow of natural light. Learn the simple tricks of Leading Lines composition approach to allow your image to impart the narrative of this sacred space.

Focus on the huge pipe organ as a whole or practice macro photography by pointing your lens at a specific section of the organ to create an abstraction of patterns reflected in the formation of the instrument pipes. Other interior design flourishes in golden hues of the pews and beams will complete the day of shooting.
