Complex Trauma | The Brain and Our Nervous System

Complex Trauma has a profound, negative effect on the Brain and Nervous System. As their primary responsibility is survival, they will make ongoing adjustments in order to survive a life of constant stress, fear or danger:

• Limbic Brain - all about surviving the next few seconds. Initiates action based on emotions and will remain activated until the stressful situtation has resolved
• Cortex - all about long-term thinking, reasoning and planning. Activates when the limbic brain calms down (will not activate if the limbic brain does not resolve, as the limbic brain trumps the cortex)
• Sympathetic Nervous System - all about energy and survival. Activated by stress, working hard, and danger
• Parasympathetic Nervous System - all about balance, rest, digestion and healing. Activated when the Sympathetic Nervous System settles down

All of these need to be working in balance or harmony with each other. We need to have times where we are productive and active, (output) but also times where we can relax and rest (input/self care). Complex Trauma messes this up, as it results in a child being in survival mode all of the time. This means that the Sympathetic Nervous System and limbic brain over-develop to points of hypersensitivity and hypervigilance. Thus, the Parasympathetic Nervous System and Cortex do not activate as they should, and may result in the person suffering from all types of mental, emotional and physical issues in adulthood.
