Community STEM Day

Bring the whole family and join us for an afternoon of fun and learning with a variety of STEM exhibitors from around the region. Whether you're a budding scientist or just curious about the world around you, there's something here for everyone. This event is free and RSVP is not required (but helps us plan!).

The following exhibitors will be joining us for September's event:

• Interstate Commission on the Potomac River Basin: "Creek Critter Meet and Greet" Ever wondered what's living at the bottom of our streams in the Potomac watershed? Here's your chance to take a look at real-life benthic macroinvertebrates and discover what they mean for the health of our streams. You won't want to miss this activity station!
• Personal Genetics Education & Dialogue (PGED): From precision medicine, to the gene-editing of plants, animals and people, to applications in law enforcement or health research, advances in genetics will touch the lives of everyone on earth. What are people and communities excited about? What questions or concerns do they have? Let's talk about it! Personal Genetics, Education & Dialogue (PGED) is a public engagement with science program based at Harvard Medical School. Our mission is to raise awareness and inspire curiosity, reflection, and dialogue about genetics. At our exhibitor booth, attendees can learn about gene editing and other genetics topics, share their perspectives on genetics applications, and engage with other attendees in an interactive card activity. www.PGED.org
• Dr. Jim Rudert: A regular around the Science Center, Dr. Jim Rudert is a retired engineer with a passion for science, education, and making. This month he'll be demonstrating his can crusher and materials detective exhibits.
• The Blair Robot Project: This group of students and alumni from Montgomery Blair High School are bringing a number of different exhibits to Community STEM Day. Come check out their robot and try your hand at driving it around. Visitors can also make straw rockets, bristle bots, and light prints as part of their exhibit.
• Panda Programmer: It's never too early for kids to learn how to code! Panda Programmer will use hands on demonstrations to show kids how to use Scratch coding language.
• Rockville Mathnasium: Bringing math to life with fun games and math concepts
• Boolean Girl: Check out our hands-on activities and demonstrations on how to code a micro:bit. The micro:bit is like a tiny computer that can be coded to run sensors, lights, motors and more.
