About this Event

Masks are optional and currently encouraged in MKE. If no wind and pleasant outside, we might sing on patio. Bring a jacket just in case! But at this point we will sing in the back room.
For all people, all voices, no prior singing experience necessary. The songs are short, fun, easy to learn, and will be taught in oral tradition. Come experience the joy of singing with others! And come into deeper connection with your body, your voice, and your community. Singing is so absolutely human, and one might say essential for these times we find ourselves in.
Limited to 25 participants. First come, first served basis. Email us if you would like to attend, but are not able to pay. You are welcome if we have space!
WHAT TO EXPECT

Singing! Community singing is as sweet and simple as singing together. Most people experience it as healing, joyful, enlivening. Community singing is not performance or solos. We will stand or sit as we sing for most of our time together aside from a bit of talking at the beginning and in between songs.

SONGLEADER INFO

Songleader Megan Eberhardt is excited to begin cultivating singing community in her old stomping grounds of Bay View. She is on fire to change the world through singing together, to build more bridges between us, to create more opportunities to experience our humanity, together. Her journey with community singing began while living on the west coast where it is more widely known. And after attending a few community sings and feeling their magic she began organizing them in her community. They quickly grew from 20 people to 100 in nine months! She can't wait to share the magic of community singing with the Sugar Maple.

QUOTES FROM SONGLEADERS ABOUT COMMUNITY SINGING
"For thousands of years, humans have sung together; sung for joy, for creating and preserving culture, to mark important stories, to enliven social movements, to grieve, to praise, to share. Something inexplicable happens when people open and blend their voices into a single lake of sound. To me, it’s one of the most basic and radical means for making, seeing, and feeling the truth of our connection with others. Permaculturist Adam Campbell said that 'song is one of the primary pattern languages of nature'." -Annie Zylstra of Heartland Harmony
“In an African world view everybody sings. It is not about how you sound, it is what you bring, knowing that singing together is a powerful thing and expecting that whatever you need to happen can be made to happen." -Ysaye Barnwell, songleader and former member of Sweet Honey in the Rock
“If we're going to draw others into the work of building a just, sustainable world, that world's got to look like a place we would also like to live in. We need joyful, local, participatory culture." -Betty Tisel of Minnesota Community Sings
