About this Event

Join Brooklyn's very own ¡OYE! Group for a List Poem: Poetry Workshop at JACK!

How do we remember the years before and the lessons learned? The one story that taught you how to be kind, the hug that made you feel held. We welcome the community for free for a poetry workshop on writing a poem about your life. We will focus on writing a list of poems about what we have lived and what is to come. We will be providing food and care packages the participants get to take home with more art materials and tools to keep their brains and imaginations active.

*This event was originally scheduled to be presented in conjunction with Oye Avant Garde Night and has been rescheduled to this date.

About the Facilitator:

Modesto “Flako” Jimenez is a Dominican-born, Bushwick-raised, multi-hyphenate artist. As a poet, playwright, educator, actor, producer, and director, his work exists in and explores the intersections of identity, language, mediums, cultures, and communities found in his personal life and beyond. Jimenez’s recent work includes Taxilandia, a site-specific performance in a moving taxi that received a New York Times Critic’s Pick and was recently recognized with an Obie Special Citation Award. Currently, Jimenez is working on Mercedes, a multi-disciplinary art experience exploring the relationships between matriarchy and ancestors, familial bonds and inherited trauma, and how our identity can impact our mental health.

¡OYE! Group is a Bushwick-based creative incubator for artists, students, and community members of all ages, both local and immigrant to New York City. Our work is grounded in the act of listening that gave us our company name: we curate art that sparks a dialogue over the political and social issues that our community tells us are critical to them. We present an eclectic mix of theater, dance, poetry, music, video installations, and film through festivals and productions. We work with emerging artists to create, play, and grow in an environment that challenges and supports them, and we engage youth and adults alike through high-quality arts education that provides them with the tools to generate forward-thinking art that compliments the work on our stages
