About this Event
Welcome to San Francisco Monthly Community Movie Nights!
February Movie: The Wisdom of Trauma
1 in 5 Americans are diagnosed with mental illness every year. Suicide is the second most common cause of death in the US for youth aged 15-24, and kills over 48,300 in the US and 800,000 people globally per year. Drug overdose kills 81,000 in the US annually. The autoimmune disorder epidemic affects 24 million people in the US alone. What is going on? The interconnected epidemics of anxiety, chronic illness, and substance abuse are, according to Dr Gabor Maté, normal - but not in the way you might think.
Movie trailer:
I'm dedicating this screening to my friend Trevor, who supported me and hosted the very first community movie night at his house, Pauwela House, back in 2022. Also, with the new San Francisco mayor’s initiative to clean our streets, I want to cultivate compassion toward the suffering of those addicted during this change phase.

Why Hosting Movie Nights
Movies are fantastic mediums for conveying ideas, thanks to the mix of visuals, music, and curated words. A movie is a limited-time experience in which we can all share the same version of reality and relate to it in our own unique ways.
Also, watching a movie with a community as a social activity is a dying art. We go to the cinemas surrounded by other people, and we never talk to them about what's happening on the big screen.
I facilitate those movie nights as a social experiment. In a decentralized, interactive way, at any point in the movie, you can raise your hand, share an insight or thought, and have the community reflect on you.
