Sun Prints: A Cyanotype Workshop
Join us for Sun Prints, a free, hands-on cyanotype workshop led by artist Arthur Fields — and a public program of his current exhibition, Water + Light, on view at South Dallas Cultural Center through October 15.
Cyanotype is one of photography's oldest processes, and it makes a picture using nothing but sunlight. We'll provide paper that's already been coated with a light-sensitive solution — all you have to do is arrange flowers and found objects on top, carry it out into the sun, and watch your design appear in deep cyanotype blue. It's the same light-based process behind Fields' Exposed to Joy series, now put directly in the community's hands.
We're holding this workshop one Saturday ahead of World Cyanotype Day (September 26), so you can get a head start on the celebration.
What to Expect
• A short, friendly introduction to how cyanotypes work — no science background needed
• Hands-on time arranging flowers and found objects into your own design
• Watching your print develop in real time in direct sunlight
• Rinsing and hanging your finished print to dry
• A one-of-a-kind piece to take home at the end of the workshop
Good to Know
• Free and open to the community — all ages welcome, no experience necessary
• All core materials are provided, including pre-coated 5" x 7" cyanotype paper
• Feel free to bring your own flowers, leaves, or small found objects (keys, lace, buttons — anything with an interesting outline) to print with
• Wear clothes you don't mind getting a little stained — the solution can leave a mark
• Most of the workshop takes place outdoors in direct sun; dress accordingly
• Space is limited, so RSVPing in advance is encouraged
