About this Event
This three-part series is designed to help parents navigate the complex digital landscape their children are growing up in. From understanding the impact of screens and social media to addressing the challenges of hypersexualized content and pornography, this series offers practical tools and values-based guidance. The goal is to empower parents to support their children through the critical phases of adolescence, from navigating the digital world to embracing healthy relationships and ultimately preparing them for a fulfilling and respectful courtship process.
Session 2: Values-Based Sex Education
- Introduction: Addressing the discomfort—why it’s important to talk about sex education in a values-based framework.
- Understanding Puberty: Helping parents navigate conversations about puberty and sexual development with their children.
- Interactive Discussion: Presentation on how to discuss values, consent, and mutual respect with adolescents.
- Q&A Break: Open floor for questions, with an anonymous question box for more sensitive inquiries.
The event features speaker Firoza Osman, B.Ed, M.Ed, an author and educator specializing in adolescence. It will be facilitated by Ibrahim J. Long, MSW, MA, IslamicFamily's Youth Wellness Manager and University of Alberta Chaplain.
As children grow and explore the world around them, they are often confronted with messages about relationships, sex, and self-worth that can be confusing or misaligned with the values we hold dear. In this interactive session, we will focus on providing parents with the tools and confidence to offer values-based sex education at home, including a discussion on bodies, pornography, consent, and respect.
We will explore how to have meaningful, age-appropriate conversations with your children about their bodies, consent, respect, and the importance of healthy boundaries. This session is designed to help you empower your kids to understand their own values and make informed, respectful decisions, even when faced with conflicting messages in the digital world.
Together, we’ll unpack the impact of hypersexualized content online and discuss strategies to guide your children in developing a strong sense of self and body positivity. The session includes open discussion and interactive activities to help you practice these conversations in real time, ensuring you leave with practical approaches to support your child's growth into adolescence with confidence and compassion.
Join us for a thoughtful exploration of how to nurture your child's understanding of sex, relationships, and identity, rooted in your family’s values.
