About the Walk

Leeds Lapwings is a new, friendly, and inclusive birdwatching group based in Leeds.

We bring together people who want to slow down, enjoy nature, explore local birdlife, and connect with others in a relaxed, welcoming setting.

No matter your experience level, you’re invited to join us for a low-pressure, social way into birdwatching. Come as you are!

We’re primarily aimed at those aged 20–45, but we welcome anyone who shares our approach.

What to Look Out For

Yeadon Tarn is home to a wide variety of wildlife. Depending on the day, you might spot:

• A veriety of waterfoul including Swans, Geese, Ducks, Coot, Moorhen, Goosander.

• Tuneful songbirds such as Reed Warblers, Goldcrest, and Song Thrush.

• A few remaining swallows and swifts before they leave us for the winter.

• Raptors including majestic Red Kite circling above, and Kestral hovering over the marshland.

• We may also spot Grey Heron, Egrets and Cormerants, who like to visit, and there are usually plenty of gulls!

What to Bring

• Water

• Snacks e.g. fruit or energy bars

• Comfortable trainers or walking shoes

• Light jacket, jumper, or coat

• Binoculars (if you have them – no worries if not!)

Optional tea or coffee stop!

Afterwards you are welcome to join us for a warm drink at a nearby cafe to get to know each other a little more and discuss the birds spotted during the walk!

Accessibility

The route is flat and mostly accessible, with plenty of opportunities to rest along the way.

There is free parking off the Highstreet and Cemetery Road and public transport nearby including the Flyer Buses and the First Bus 34 and 27.

Booking

Spaces are limited so we can keep the group small and friendly. Book your free ticket today to join us. If the walk is fully subscribed, we invite you to join the waitlist to be given access to a spot if one is made available.
