About this Event

Join us for an Active Threat Training led by the San Francisco Police Department in partnership with the Emanu-El security team.

Great security is strongest when all of us share a baseline of awareness and calm. This kind of preparedness training is recommended for large organizations and reflects best practices followed by major congregations, schools, and community centers across the country.

What to expect
A practical, plain-spoken session designed to inform and empower, not to frighten. SFPD officers experienced in community preparedness will cover how to stay aware of your surroundings without living in fear, how to recognize and report something that doesn't feel right, what to do in the unlikely event of an emergency, and how our own security measures support you. There will be time for questions throughout. No prior experience is needed.

Please note
At one point, SFPD will use a blank-firing device to demonstrate what gunfire sounds like inside a building. You will hear loud, simulated gunshots. There is no live ammunition and the demonstration is fully controlled and safe, but the sound is realistic and can be startling. Facilitators will give clear notice beforehand, and you are welcome to step out for that portion. If loud or sudden sounds are difficult for you, please reach out ahead of time and we'll make sure you're supported.

Good to know

• Duration: approximately 4 hours (9:00 AM–1:00 PM)
• Recommended for ages 16 and up, given the realistic content
• Open to congregants and our staff, who will train alongside you
• Please register in advance so we can plan the space appropriately
