Common Sense: Navigating Everyday Cognition

Issue

The question of common sense — the endeavor to exhibit the constitution of everyday understanding and thinking — has become one of the more pressing problems of the 21st century. Evidence includes the:

• Increased efforts of corporate and political entities to avail common sense to achieve their tactical and strategic objectives;
• Disturbances in revenue and profits suffered by organizations when they decouple their operations from the common-sense perspectives of audiences and clients, and;
• Growing public and private efforts to encode common sense (AI).

Response

This one-day (8-hour) workshop (1) reduces common sense to its basic cognitive operations, (2) teaches the heuristics of everyday judgments, choices, and decisions, (3) and delivers prescriptions to mitigate common-sense bias. A cognitive-psychological perspective is employed. It is framed cybernetically to exhibit the relation of common sense to organizational performance. The workshop includes discovery sessions, knowledge checks, and exercises.

Teaching Method

The CFD-IC combines the outcomes of the Army Basic Instructor Course (ABIC), the Small Group Instructor Training Course (SGITC), and the Faculty Development Program Phase 1 (FDP1). It is the “gold standard” of adult learning. Its methodology — which includes discovery sessions, knowledge checks, and exercises — enables clients to optimize learning fast. The author obtained his CFD-IC certification in 2019.

Joaquin Trujillo PhD — Sigetic CEO/CTO — is a former Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Operations Officer and holds a PhD in Sociology from Florida International University (FIU).
