A panel discussion on the challenges faced by modern democracies to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Portuguese Carnation Revolution.
About this Event

On 25th April 2024, the Embassy of Portugal in Dublin will be hosting an academic discussion in collaboration with the School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics of University College Dublin (UCD), to mark the 50th anniversary of the Portuguese Carnation Revolution (“Revolução dos Cravos”).


Drawing on the Portuguese and Irish experiences of the 20th century, this event will consist of an interactive panel discussion on the many challenges faced by modern democracies, entitled “Democracy under Threat”.


The panel will include the presence of the following academics whose research relates to the theme:

Prof. Thomas Dӓubler (University College of Dublin), a specialist in the field of Comparative Politics, with particular emphasis in European democracies.

Prof. Marie-Luce Paris (University College of Dublin), the Director of the Centre for Human Rights, whose research focuses on Comparative Constitutional Law, Human Rights law and European Public Law.

Prof. Filipe Ribeiro de Menezes (University of Maynooth), an expert in contemporary Portuguese history and diplomatic history in general.

This event will be moderated by the Head of School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics of University College Dublin, Professor Síofra Pierse.


Attendees will have the chance to interact with the distinguished academics that will take part in this panel, and a short reception (“vin d’honneur”) will follow.


The commemoration will take place at from 5:15 pm to 7:45 the University College of Dublin’s Belfied Campus, in the Moore Auditorium, Science Building.
