Commemorating 250: SF of the Future – A what-if dispatch from the year 2100

This July 4th, America turns 250.  The first mass was held at Mission Dolores, but San Francisco itself won't reach that same milestone until the year 2100, when it will celebrate the 250th anniversary of its incorporation on April 15, 1850.

2100 is 74 years away, close enough that many of our children and grandchildren will be there to see it. So what will their San Francisco look like?

Will the Embarcadero be underwater? Will anyone under 40 still live here? Will the Hayward Fault have finally ruptured, and how did we rebuild differently? Will Karl the Fog be long gone, leaving our summers to feel like LA's? Will anyone still commute to an “office”—or even work? Will our population be closer to 500,000, or 2 million? Will a studio apartment cost $10,000 a month? Will more tourists visit virtually than physically? And is San Francisco's best chapter behind it, or are we just getting started?

Futurist and speculative designer Jason Tester will draw on two decades of experience building plausible, immersive scenarios to present an original, vivid, and deliberately provocative what-if vision of San Francisco at the turn of the 22nd century. Building on climate science, seismic models, demographic projections, AI trajectories, longevity research, and diverse expert predictions, this dispatch-from-the-future will preview a city that has been flooded, shaken, automated, and reinvented, at once unrecognizable and enduringly familiar.

Every attendee will take home a small physical artifact from San Francisco's future, sent back 74 years in time.
