The great essayist Annie Dillard wrote, “What is there is interesting.”
Easy for her to say!
But the challenge, and the thrill, of writing non-fiction, is figuring out how to honor the simple truth of “what is there,” while at the same time making it glow in the minds of your readers as something truly interesting.
In Part 3 of Writing for Humans, we’ll practice some techniques for managing these (seemingly) contradictory impulses. I’ll show you how to look for a good essay subject, how to swerve artfully between obsession and useful distraction, and how to suggest a whole, big world with just a few words.
You’ll leave the workshop having written your own mini-essay, and hopefully with some inspiration for your future non-fiction writing.
