About this Event
Date: Saturday 1 February
Time: 10:00–13:00
Meeting point:Outside the main entrance of Tate Britain at 10:00am (bottom of the stairs on the right)
Rather than moving quickly through the gallery, we’ll choose a single work and give it our full attention, noticing details, shifts in feeling, questions that arise, and how the painting unfolds over time.
What we’ll do
- Meet outside Tate Britain at 10:00am
- Enter the gallery together and settle into the Fear and Freedom exhibition
- Spend around 2 hours quietly looking at one painting
- Finish with a 30-minute group conversation sharing reflections (optional to speak)
You’re welcome to draw, write, or simply look, there’s no expectation to produce anything.
Seating
The gallery has kindly said they can provide a small number of stools for the group. You may choose to stand instead and shift position as needed.
About the exhibition
Fear and Freedom explores British art made during and after the Second World War (1940–1965), a period shaped by conflict, recovery, and social change. The works reflect questions of fear, resilience, identity, and freedom, themes that often reveal more the longer you sit with them.
