Join us this October for a hands-on seminar with Stephen Fick exploring the Langes Messer and the fighting principles behind the one-handed cutting sword.
The Messer is such an interesting weapon, being a cut and thrust sword used by both peasants and professional warriors all throughout medieval Europe. With an emphasis on devastating cuts, tricky feints, and closing on the enemy for brutal takedowns, the messer is a great all-purpose weapon with a rich history.
Throughout the seminar, we'll work on:
⚔️ Powerful and controlled one-handed cutting mechanics
⚔️ Attacking while protecting your hands and body
⚔️ Defensive cuts and immediate counterattacks
⚔️ Dealing with and preventing counter-cuts
⚔️ Distance, timing, and positioning
⚔️ Weapon control and disarms
⚔️ Closing into grappling range
⚔️ Grappling with the sword
⚔️ Using the hilt and pommel at close range
And you don't have to be a Messer fencer to get something out of this class.
Steaphen will be teaching concepts that apply broadly to one-handed cutting swords. If you train arming sword, sidesword, sabre, dussack, or another similar weapon, you'll find plenty here that can be brought back into your own fencing.
Whether you're already training HEMA or you're interested in exploring the Langes Messer for the first time, come spend the day cutting, defending, grappling, and getting a better understanding of what this weapon can really do.
