Comal Food Books & Goods:
Comal Food Books & Goods is a pop up food book store and cafe with dreams of a brick and mortar in the near future. We are passionate about food. We created Comal out of a deep appreciation for both home cooks and culinary professionals throughout Arizona and beyond. We curate a selection of books, food goods and events that will inspire creativity and connection through cooking and enjoying food together with a deep appreciation for those who are a part of the process-- this includes everyone from the farm worker to the renowned chef to the family matriarch who cooks with love for their family.
ABOUT THE PANELISTS:
Charlie Blonkenfeld is the chef and owner of Bagelfelds. A Brooklyn native, he transitioned from running a successful catering business to selling bagels at farmers markets during the Pandemic. Within the year, he opened up a brick and mortar location, now able to sell fresh bagels daily to happy customers. Bon Appetit included Bagelfelds on their list of “The Very Best Bagels in the US.”
Crystal Kass is the Pastry Chef at Valentine and a 2024 James Beard finalist. Originally from the suburbs of Chicago, Kass moved to Phoenix after training at The French Pastry School in Chicago. Her
work at Valentine has been recognized nationally. Her pastry has topped ‘Best of Lists’ from The New York Times, Eater included her as a “Pastry Chef Defining Restaurant Dessert,” and she has made history
as the first Arizona pastry chef to be a James Beard finalist.
Elle Murtagh is former owner and chef of beloved vegan spots, the Coronado, Dark Hall and Bragg’s Factory Diner.
Ryan Avery (panel moderator) is the Office Manager for Bagelfelds. He is the creator behind their first zine, If You Know, You Know. Ryan has practiced and explored many different creative fields, from
musical/performing arts to the visual arts. He released his first zine in 2020, through his indie record label Related Records. Since then, Avery has organized and produced multiple zines, including ones for other
artists on the label and the religious art/literature zine series "TESTIMONY".
ABOUT THE ZINE WORKSHOP:
Charissa Lucille is a multimedia artist who earned their BFA in Journalism and Mass Communications from Arizona State University in 2014. They are currently quilting, self publishing, and running Wasted
Ink Zine Distro. Lucille uses the mediums of textiles, photography, and zines, to explore their identity and activism as it relates to disability, neurodiversity, and queerness. Their artwork has been exhibited locally
at Phoenix Art Museum, Northlight Gallery, and First Studio Gallery, and has been published in Love Quilting Magazine, UPPERCASE Magazine, Bolt Zine, Femme Fotale, among others.
