About this Event
This talk will sketch out the history of the Friends of Columbia’s Society of Fellows and Heyman Center for the Humanities, offer an overview of the kinds of colloquia that have regularly been offered for the Friends over the years, and consider some opportunities for innovative growth and development in the Friends’ programming in the next half-decade or so. Interaction with the Salmagundi Club is central to the Friends’ vision for new initiatives that will be mutually beneficial to both parties. The talk will explore some possibilities for how that symbiosis might work, with emphasis on instructional strategies that aim not just to be informative, but also to be engaging and enjoyable for people from all walks of life.
Salmagundi members will receive their promo code via email for free admission. The promo code may also be requested by emailing [email protected]

About Columbia Friends
The Society of Fellows and Heyman Center for the Humanities provides the intellectual and physical space for interdisciplinary discussions among members of the Columbia community and the New York City public. It brings together faculty and students from across the university—from the humanities, social and natural sciences, law, medicine, journalism, and the arts—to share thinking, debate ideas, and collectively consider methodological, conceptual, and ethical issues of common interest and concern.
The Friends is an alumni-based organization that is affiliated with the larger Society of Fellows and Heyman Center for the Humanities. Every year, it hosts a series of professor-led courses (usually two per semester) that are known as the Carl Hovde Colloquia, named in memory of Carl F. Hovde, Professor of English and Dean of Columbia College (1968-1972).
