About this Event

5 Week Course:
Mondays 11th July - 8th August 2022
18:00-20:30

Explore colour through informative seminars, guided experiments and practical printmaking projects led by artist Ellen Burroughs. Gain understanding of the scientific, historical and cultural context of colour as a whole, with particular focus on certain colours. From folklore, bizarre facts and psychological theory, through to our own emotional connections with colour- this course delves into all the complex factors that are in play when we see colour and how we can use this insight when applying it in our own art and design work.

You will develop your knowledge and understanding of colour, contribute to critical discussion and complete a series of print editions using different printmaking processes including linocut, monoprinting and screen printing.

What experience do I need?

This course is suitable for beginners and for more experienced printmakers who are interested in expanding their knowledge and confidence with colour application.

What will I make?

You'll come away from the course with a selection of different prints and artworks onto paper. These include a simple reduction lino print, a series of monoprints, a 3-colour screen print and a number of collaged works.

You will also make your own colour journal to record notes and ideas throughout the course.

Who is my tutor?

Ellen Burroughs is an artist and printmaker living and working between Leeds and London. She has taught printmaking and run practical workshops for over 7 years both as a freelance artist through museums and organisations such as The Tetley and East St Arts, as well as a technician at Leeds Arts University and Leeds Beckett University. Ellen is currently completing her Masters in Print at the RCA and runs online courses through Swarthmore Education Centre. Ellen also runs Lutra Studio, a collaborative print editioning studio in East Leeds.

Do I need to bring anything?

Basic materials will be provided which will include cartridge paper, inks and printmaking tools & equipment.

You will be encouraged to purchase additional printmaking papers to try throughout the course with prices ranging from £1-£3.20 per large sheet.

It will be useful to bring a portfolio folder with you to carry your work home. We also sell plastic portfolio folders (A3 is £3 and A2 is £4) should you wish to purchase one from us.

Please note Eventbrite’s booking fee is non refundable. By making a booking you are agreeing to our full course terms and conditions which can be found on our website .

What if the course is cancelled?

Accessibility

Our aim is to bring printmaking to as many people as possible. By their nature, some printmaking processes involve an amount of physical effort. Leeds Print Workshop is based in a basement studio at Patrick Studios, a bespoke venue for artists operated by East Street Arts. It is fully wheelchair accessible, with a lift, larger than standard doors and disabled toilet facilities. We recognise that everybody’s accessibility needs may differ, therefore please email us at [email protected] to discuss any concerns you may have before booking. There is one dedicated disabled car parking space to the side of the building on Rider Street.

Please note: we regret that, for safety reasons, only those over the age of 16 will be permitted to undertake the course.
