Join us on an artistic and scientific journey with our upcoming STEAM class – "Colorful Chemistry: Tye-Dye Shirt Extravaganza!" Here's a sneak peek into the captivating science behind this creative adventure:
The Magic of Sharpies and Rubbing Alcohol:
Students will explore the fascinating world of solubility and chromatography as they craft their unique tye-dye shirts. Sharpies, known for their vibrant colors, contain pigments that dissolve in rubbing alcohol. When applied to fabric, the alcohol carries the pigments, creating a mesmerizing diffusion of hues. It's a hands-on lesson in chemistry that transforms ordinary shirts into wearable masterpieces.
Solubility in Action:
As students draw with Sharpies, the alcohol acts as a solvent, breaking down the ink's molecular structure. This process allows the pigments to spread and intermingle, forming beautiful gradients and patterns on the fabric. Witnessing the science of solubility in action, participants gain a deeper understanding of the chemical principles at play in everyday materials.
Chromatography Unleashed:
The blending of colors on the shirts mirrors the chromatography process, where substances separate based on their molecular characteristics. Students will observe how different pigments within the sharpies travel at varying rates, creating intricate designs. Workshop Times:
The workshop will have three small group times to choose from in order for the students to get age-appropriate lessons and connect with their peers. Kindergarten to 6th Graders are welcome. Group times are approximate. Please email me at [email protected] with any questions.
12:00 - 1:00 : Kindergarten to 2nd
1:15 - 2:15: Early Elementary
2:30 - 3:30: Upper Elementary
