Hilan Warshaw’s film Mahler in New York recreates the Manhattan sojourn of this legendary European Jewish composer/conductor. For the last three years of his life, Gustav Mahler was a New Yorker, living on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Here he composed his Ninth and Tenth Symphonies, faced family crises and his final illness, and shaped the city's musical life through his directorships of the Metropolitan Opera and the New York Philharmonic. This film combines musical performances, archival material, and evocative location footage of the city to shed new light on Mahler's last years and work. The film also explores how Mahler's music continues to resonate  today.

This event is part of MahlerFest, held in Boulder from May 13-17 at various Boulder venues. This year, the 39th MahlerFest, celebrates “Reinvention: Channeling Change into Creativity”. Artistic Director Kenneth Woods (Director of the English Symphony) conducts the outstanding MahlerFest Orchestra, together with superb soloists and extraordinary ensembles.
