Join us for a fun and interesting workshop exploring collograph and monoprinting techniques to create your own unique series of prints onto paper.You’ll learn how to use our specialist equipment, etching presses and oil based inks. These collograph techniques will focus on creating a printing plate using various textures and you’ll use stencils to combine the process with monoprinting.
What experience do I need?
This one day workshop is aimed at the complete beginner or someone who has attended one of our monoprint taster sessions and wants to add a new technique to their skills.
What will I make?
You will make a series of prints onto A4 paper from 2 or 3 printing plates and any number of cut out stencils. In past sessions absolute beginners have made 20 or more prints.
Who is my tutor?
This course is taught by Mick Welbourn and Joanna Wilkinson.
Joanna Wilkinson is a practising printmaker, illustrator and bookbinder. She uses printing, collage, analogue/slow photography and sometimes even old style colouring techniques like felt tips in her work. Joanna has recently completed an MA Creative Practice at Leeds Arts University and is also a Co-operative Member of Leeds Print Workshop.
Mick Welbourn is currently the manager of the printmaking workshops at Leeds Arts University, where he has worked for more than twenty years. Over the years he has taught printmaking to adults as well as to A level, Foundation, Degree and Masters students.
Do I need to bring anything?
All the inks, papers, tools and equipment needed to make collographs and monoprints will be provided. This will include relief inks and rollers, mountcard, tape, plastic monoprint plates, and paper to print on.
Students can bring sketchbooks, shapes, patterns or other images for inspiration, but this is not necessary – simple abstract shapes work well for both collograph and monoprint, and you can come up with ideas on the day of the workshop.

If I can't attend can I get a refund?
We will refund you, less a 10% admin fee, if you cancel no less than 14 days before the start of the course, after this time no refunds will be issued. Transfers are also possible up until 14 days before the start of the course. By making a booking you are agreeing to our full course terms and conditions which can be found on our website here.
What if the course is cancelled?
We reserve the right to cancel the course for any reason (for example, insufficient bookings). We will endeavour to give at least 7 days notice if the course is cancelled and in the event of cancellation we will, of course, issue you a full refund.
Accessibility
Our aim is to bring printmaking to as many people as possible. By their nature, some printmaking processes involve an amount of physical effort. Leeds Print Workshop is based in a basement studio at Patrick Studios, a bespoke venue for artists operated by East Street Arts. It is wheelchair accessible, with a lift, larger than standard doors and accessible toilet facilities. We recognise that everybody’s accessibility needs may differ, therefore please email us at [email protected] to discuss any concerns you may have before booking. There is one blue badge car parking space to the side of the building on Rider Street, subject to availability.
Please note: we regret that, for safety reasons, only those over the age of 16 will be permitted to undertake the course.
