In the midst of his busy work as Thomas Cantor, Johann Sebastian Bach also found time to compose a great deal of incidental music, often of outstanding quality. This is certainly true of the magisterial funeral cantata Lass, Fürstin, lass noch einen Strahl, BWV198. It is a haunting musical farewell, written in 1727 as a tribute to the Saxon princess Christiane Eberhardine, beloved wife of Polish King August the Strong. This ode is a contemplation on the transitory versus the eternal.
