Collectivity doesn’t play groove music so much as activate it. Their live sets unfold like a conversation between muscle memory and curiosity – deep rhythmic foundations opening into psychedelic detours, then snapping back into focus with precision and intent. Its music built for movement, but powered by listening.
Formed in Shanghai and now operating out of the Bay Area, Collectivity emerged from a desire to work off the grid – outside rigid genre lines and predictable structures. That spirit became the foundation of the band’s first record, Off the Grid; a release that established their commitment to collective improvisation, emotional pacing and ensemble-driven storytelling. Rather than chasing polish, the album captured a band learning how to trust space, groove and each other.
Since then, Collectivity has continued to expand its sound into something more cinematic and modern. Jazz-rooted improvisation, electronic textures and soulful, melodic writing now coexist seamlessly, creating performances that fee spontaneous without ever losing their center. Structured compositions dissolve into collective risk, then reassemble into something heavier, more emotional and undeniably alive. A flexible funk backbone ensures audiences a workout on the dancefloor.
Dig deeper into the band’s lineup and a vast network of industry-level collaborations emerge – years spent working alongside major touring artists and genre-defining projects across jazz, pop, rock and beyond. That experience shows not as flash, but as authority: dynamic control, deep ensemble awareness, and the confidence to let moments unfold rather than force them. Two of the constants in this lineup include Ben Misterka on guitar and Uriah Duffy on bass. The pair has also been the foundation of Lyrics Born’s touring band for many years. Their abilities on their respective instruments are nothing short of jaw-dropping.
Their 2024 release Oakland Sessions documents the band’s chemistry in its rawest form, while the recent single, “Microdose,” points towards a bolder, more dance-forward future. With performances across Asia, Europe and the U.S. – including opening for Larry Graham at Shanghai Arena – Collectivity has built a reputation for shows that don’t just entertain, but convert. This is a band fluent in groove, atmosphere and release – honoring tradition without being defined by it.
