Art Omi Pavilion architects and Founder + Co-Executive Director, Francis Greenburger speak on the development of the new site in Chatham, NY
About this Event

Join us for an evening panel conversation with Francis Greenburger, Founder and Co-Executive Director of Art Omi Pavilions, as well as the National Academicians (NA) participating in the development and design of the exhibition spaces at the rural site in Chatham, NY. We will hear about the project’s origins and plans, as well as from some of the architects designing the unique art spaces, including the Mini Pavilions project by newly elected National Academicians Florian Idenburg and Jing Liu, principals of SO – IL, and the collaboration between Gluckman Tang architects Richard Gluckman NA and Andrew Weigand on the Pavilion for Torkwase Dyson NA.

Art Omi Pavilions @ Chatham welcomes highly distinguished artists to create legacy standalone exhibitions of their work in a setting that they control and help design, but one that also belongs to a larger art center which provides cultural context and museological standards. Approximately 18 artists and collectors will be offered the opportunity to create individual Pavilions devoted solely to their work across the 190-acre site in Chatham, NY, utilizing the existing open fields as building sites and minimizing the removal of existing trees and vegetation.

RESERVATIONS: Admission is free but reservations are required. The program will begin at 6:30PM EST.

ACCESSIBILITY: This venue is fully accessible to wheelchairs. To request a free ASL (American Sign Language) interpretation or CART (Communication Access Real-Time Translation) captioning service, email your request at least three weeks in advance of the event to [email protected].

About the Speakers

Richard Gluckman NA has occupied a special place in the world of art and design, since establishing his architectural practice in New York City in 1977, creating distinctive spaces and buildings for artists, public arts institutions, art foundations, galleries and art collectors. In recent years, Gluckman has applied his unique design sensibility, informed by decades of collaboration with artists and curators, to projects for universities, resorts, developers, and private clients. Gluckman’s design approach is defined by an emphasis on architecture as an experiential opportunity; as a frame for art and human activity.

Francis Greenburger is an American real estate developer, literary agent, author, philanthropist, activist and founder of Time Equities Inc., Art Omi, Inc., and the Greenburger Center for Social & Criminal Justice. He is the Founder and Chairman of Art Omi, a sculpture and architecture park and arts center founded in 1992, which also provides residencies for visual artists, writers, dancers, musicians, and architects from all over the world. Most recently, Mr. Greenburger founded the Greenburger Center for Social and Criminal Justice in 2014, which advocates for reforms to the criminal justice and mental health systems. He also serves on the board of several not for profit organizations and is an active donor to over 300 charitable organizations. Mr. Greenburger graduated from Baruch College in 1974 with a degree in Public Administration. He is an avid tennis player and traveler. He resides in Manhattan with his wife Isabelle Autones and is the proud father of four children: Morgan, Noah, Julia and Claire.

Florian Idenburg NA is an internationally renowned architect with over two decades of professional experience. After learning the ropes in Amsterdam and Tokyo, he founded SO – IL in New York in 2008 together with Jing Liu. His years of working in cross-cultural settings make Florian a thoughtful, enthusiastic partner. With a joyous demeanor, he pursues innovation through collaboration. His particularly strong background in institutional spaces has seen him lead the office on such projects as Kukje Gallery in Seoul, the Manetti Shrem Museum of Art at UC Davis, and Amant Arts Campus in Brooklyn. His strength lies in generating imaginative ideas and transforming them into real-world spaces.

Jing Liu NA co-founded SO – IL with Florian Idenburg in 2008 in New York City after receiving her education in China, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Over 20 years of practice, Jing has brought an intellectually open, globally aware, and locally embedded sensibility to her work spanning a wide range of mission-driven cultural projects. Through building practice and interdisciplinary collaborations, Jing has led SO – IL to explore new fabrication techniques, such as in Kukje Gallery, Las Americas Housing project, and K11 Museum — and to engage with the socio-political conditions of contemporary cities — in projects like Martin Luther King Library in Cleveland, Neighborhoods Now initiative in New York, and the Melbourne Arts Precinct Transformation.

Andrew Weigand is a Principal at Gluckman Tang Architects, where he has spent 11+ years focused on the design of cultural projects. He has managed the design for several museums, crafted concept designs, masterplans, and competition submissions, and developed designs for private art-related projects. In 2013, he co-founded Afoam, a design/build collaborative with whom he has completed a range of fabrication, residential, and retail projects. Key experiences include designs for venues and exhibitions for an art exhibition start-up and collaborations with artists, designers, and academics, on projects including sculptures, data visualizations, and illustrations.

Collective Stewardship is the National Academy of Design’s series of free, in-person and virtual, educational public programs that focus on artist and architect foundations and the different approaches and solutions for the planning and preservation of their legacies for the public good and future public accessibility. The ongoing series of talks, panels, and workshops features living legacy projects and foundations with public missions, coupling purposeful storytelling with specific information about the preparation and tools needed to build an accessible archive.
