Collective Oral Storytelling: Cripping Fairytales
About this Event
Have you ever encountered an enchanted elf who needs a wheelchair to get around? How about a fairy with chronic fatigue who can’t fly too far and needs to take breaks by lying down inside the nearest flower? Or a neurodivergent mermaid who is struggling to fit in with her community? Perhaps, you’ve come across a selkie navigating through psychosis? It is likely you haven’t because unfortunately, Disabled, Chronically Ill, Mentally Ill, and Neurodivergent characters are seldom featured as the protagonist of a fairytale. Quite often, we are depicted as the villains of the story or not featured at all. What would cripping fairytales look like? What if we were the heroes of fantastical adventures? What if we told our own magical stories by us and for us? Join us for an enchanted gathering where we will collectively create fairytales featuring Disabled/Mad/Neurodivergent protagonists. Using prompt cards from the Once Upon A Time Storytelling Game, we will take turns weaving the stories out loud. Expect a bit of improv, a great deal of imaginative storytelling, and lots of fun! If you’re up for some extra (but completely optional) whimsy, come dressed up like a fairytale character!

About the facilitator:
Hanan Hazime is a Disabled/Mad/Neurodivergent Lebanese-Canadian multidisciplinary artist, creative writer, community arts educator, and creative writing instructor living in Tkaronto/Toronto. Hanan’s writing has appeared in several publications including The Windsor Review, Feckless C*nts: An Anthology of Feminist Writing, and on CBC Arts.
Her poetry chapbook Aorta was published by ZED Press in 2018. Hanan is one of the co-editors of the anthology Muslim American Writers at Home, and the anthology Up:Rising- A Collection of Rebellious Imaginings from Authors with Lived Experience of Mental Health & Addictions. Hanan's interdisciplinary and visual artwork has been featured in several shows including the Bursting Bubbles exhibition at the Rendezvous With Madness Festival, the digital series Talking Back And Together at the AGO, and the CoMotion Exhibit at the Harbourfront Centre. When not writing or creating art, Hanan enjoys reading poetry, romantasy, and speculative fiction, overanalyzing things, photo-blogging, dancing with faeries in the woods, swimming with mermaids, and drinking copious amounts of tea.
