Ukrainian Museum of Canada, Alberta Branch celebrates its 80th anniversary with a new permanent exhibit in the museum gallery and foyer, as well as a temporary 2-day exhibit in the St. John's Cultural Centre auditorium.
The primary goal of the exhibit is to display important artifacts with known provenances that ideally have anecdotes or history associated with them, their previous owners, their artists or their artisans. These data points and narratives would have been recollected by previous owners, artists or artisans, and retold to the museum by the artifacts' donors or found in newspaper articles, journal articles, books and artists' websites. Over the years, several UMCAB board members and curators made notable artifact donations, sometimes donating their own art. We aim to highlight important recollections about artifacts, artisans, artists, board member-donors, curator-donors and previous owners whose works and former cultural property built the museum collection, by displaying their associated artifacts accompanied by their unique stories and historical photographs.
Historical UMCAB collection eras characterized by considerable donations first from pioneers and then from collectors, or the period denoting the start and continuation of fine art collecting at UMCAB, will provide an organizational structure to part of the exhibit layout.
Photos of historical UMCAB exhibits and some of their related artifacts will also be featured.
Join us on the evening of Saturday May 3rd for a short program to open the exhibit. A total of eighty embroidered sorochky will be displayed in the gallery, foyer and auditorium, in addition to other folk textiles, woodwork, ceramics, pysanky, straw weavings, religious artifacts, pioneer items, folk toys, folk paintings and fine art that have notable data points (provenance, anecdotes) attributed to them. Since many of the sorochky in the auditorium will be displayed against a black background, we encourage you to Don Your Vyshyvanka with black accompanying clothing and Exhibit Yourself next to the museum sorochky. Food and beverages will follow the opening program.
