Collection Bites: Indo-Greek numismatics and colonial imagination

Using an Indo-Greek coin as its starting point, this talk looks at how ancient objects can carry powerful modern meanings.

The session traces how eighteenth and nineteenth century European scholars used Indo-Greek coins to shape ideas about civilisation, empire, and cultural identity, often through a colonial lens.

At the same time, the coin itself tells a more complex story: one of exchange, coexistence, and the blending of ancient Greek and South Asian cultures. Focusing closely on a single coin, you will be invited to rethink how museums, archaeology, and colonial histories continue to shape our understanding of the ancient world.

Collection Bites is an adult programme, however the content is suitable for all ages. Presented by the Museum’s Visitor Team, the talks are approx. 30 minutes. They take place on the first Wednesday of each month in the Research Studio on Floor 2 (accessible by stairs or lift).
