About this Event

Presented with The Book Club of California: Terrible! Thrilling! True! Collecting the Books, Brochures & Ephemera of the Donner Party – Presentation by Jim Hier

In the history of Westward Expansion, the Donner Party stands alone. Their story has been the inspiration for a bounty of books and pamphlets, both serious and some not so much. The literary history of the Donner Party runs the gamut from histories, biographies, fiction, epic poems, plays and even a cookbook (!)

After more than fifty years of collecting all things Donner Party, amateur historian and author Jim Hier joins us to share items from his collection and discuss the literary legacy of the Donner Party.

Jim Hier has had a lifelong interest in American history, which he attributes to his father, a former teacher with the Los Angeles Unified School District. Hier graduated with a degree in History from Claremont McKenna College and retired after a 50+ year career in financial services.

He has written several history or book related articles for national publications, as well as a book on the history of his home town of Granada Hills, California, published by Arcadia Publishing in 2007. Among other interests, he has been collecting books on a variety of topics, including the Donner Party tragedy. He is currently working on a comprehensive bibliography of published presidential books and speeches.
