The evening culminates in voting for your favorite artwork, with the winner announced at the end of the night.
About Collecting Texas
Throughout our 70-year history, the McNay Art Museum has brought the very best of modern and contemporary art to San Antonio, beginning with its founding collection: the bequest from Marion Koogler McNay. As we mark the McNay’s 70th anniversary, we honor Marion Koogler McNay’s vision and the contributions of collectors like Robert L.B. Tobin and John Parker, Jr.
From 2003-2020, the McNay Contemporary Collectors Forum (MCCF) played a vital role in voting on many of these acquisitions. For example, Whitfield Lovell, whose work Cake Walk was acquired in 2010 through MCCF, will be featured in our Fall banner exhibition, Whitfield Lovell: Passages, opening this October. The McNay is proud to be at the forefront of developing art connoisseurship and education while highlighting artists gaining national recognition.
Our new iteration of community voting, Collecting Texas, kicked off in 2023. The annual event focuses on a different Texas city each year, representing the rich variety of themes and materials in Texas art today. At last year’s inaugural event, guests explored artists with ties to El Paso, with Fausto Fernandez’s work receiving the popular vote. Fernandez’s work, entitled Burden Narratives While Stuck in Traffic in Pursuit of an Obligation at the Port of Entry, is now part of the vibrant fabric of the McNay’s permanent collection.
