One of the young millennium’s quintessential underground bands, Coliseum was founded in 2003 by singer/guitarist Ryan Pattersonand includes bass player Kayhan Vaziriand drummer Carter Wilson.
After releasing their debut album in 2004, Coliseum blazed an unrelenting trail of scorched earth across the globe playing 1000 shows and releasing five full-length albums. Part of the wave of forward-thinking heavy bands of the early Aughts that included their contemporaries Torche, Baroness, Kylesa, Cursed, and Doomriders, Coliseum successfully melded progressive musicianship, hardcore fervor, and vital social awareness into one constantly evolving artistic vision. Their albums on Relapse, Temporary Residence Ltd, and Deathwish Inc were watershed moments in the progression from DIY hardcore punk to creatively ambitious and contemplative heavy music. Coliseum toured extensively in North America, Europe, Australia, and Japan with the aforementioned bands as well as Converge, Rise Against, High On Fire, Mono, From Ashes Rise, Russian Circles, Girls Against Boys, Municipal Waste, Dillinger Escape Plan, Napalm Death, and many others. Coliseum went on indefinite hiatus in late 2015 after releasing their fifth and final album, Anxiety’s Kiss.
Patterson went on to form post-punk band Fotocrime, Vaziri continued with grind metal act Yautja, and Wilson fronts slowcore group Null. The trio remain close friends and in 2023 they released a surprise album under the moniker C.L.S.M.called Infinity Shit on Equal Vision Records. The album harkened back to their d-beat roots and appeared on many year-end best lists.Coinciding with the 20th anniversary of their first album, Coliseum has returned and will be making select festival and live show appearances. In Fall 2024, EqualVision Records will be releasing a new special edition vinyl reissue of Coliseum’s self-titled first album.
