Our new COLD SWEAT series kicks off on Friday, September 20th with an electrifying J-Horror double feature: Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s genre-defining Cure (1997) at 7pm, followed by Hideo Nakata’s seminal classic Ringu (1998) at 9:30pm. Buy tickets at facets.org/cinemaKicking off the night at 7pm, Cure delves into the unsettling world of psychological horror with a chilling narrative about a series of grisly murders connected by a disturbing pattern. Directed by Kiyoshi Kurosawa, this film weaves a hypnotic atmosphere of dread as Detective Kenichi Takabe unravels a labyrinthine investigation involving an enigmatic amnesiac and a sinister force that defies explanation. With its hallucinatory visuals and deep psychological tension, Cure remains a high watermark in Japanese horror.
Following at 9:30pm, Ringu offers a masterclass in supernatural suspense. Directed by Hideo Nakata, this classic centers on a cursed VHS tape that causes the viewer to die exactly seven days after watching it. Television journalist Reiko’s investigation into the urban legend leads her into a terrifying confrontation with the malevolent spirit of Sadako. Ringu not only became the highest-grossing Japanese horror film of its time but also set a new standard for horror cinema worldwide. Join us for this double feature and experience the spine-tingling legacy of J-Horror at its finest.
This screening is presented in partnership with FACETS Anime Club and programmed by Nick Edelberg and Emma Greenleaf.
