About this Event
Colchester's Victorian Doctors Book Launch
Important medical discoveries marked Queen Victoria’s reign, but Jane Pearson focuses instead on how medicine became a profession. Her study examines how Colchester’s Victorian doctors developed professionally and how far they shaped medical and social change locally. Before the 1858 Medical Act, doctors worked as competing businessmen, guarded their privacy and sometimes used local politics to build reputations. After regulation and registration, doctors increasingly shared research, collaborated and adopted formal training. Pearson explores how these changes unfolded over generations, from hospital hierarchies to public health campaigns and Poor Law medicine, illuminating medical change through the experience of one Essex town.
The evening will include an author talk, a book signing, and refreshments.
