Sustainable Fibers Coiled Basket Meditation Workshops: We'll be learning a coiled basket technique to express inner states of mind.

COVID-19 NOTICE -- SUMMER 2021
-We are in a time of transition with Covid precautions and vaccine rates, so I look closely at all emerging CDC guidance.
- To that end, classes will currently be held in an Outdoor Studio Garden with plenty of fresh air.
-Classes are capped at 8 students max to provide adequate distancing.
-Fully vaccinated people may remove masks when at their distanced tables, but must wear them when inside the indoor studio to use the facilities.
-Unvaccinated people must wear masks fully worn over mouth and nose at all times.
-Social distancing will still be met, with two students per table at 6 foot distance, and demos are limited to 15 minutes at a time with instructor.
-Proper hand hygiene and sanitation is readily available. Students must wash hands upon entry to studio. And hand sanitizer will be available.
-All students will have their own set of tools to use, that have been sanitized.
-Anyone who is sick, or exhibiting any symptoms of Covid-19, must not attend. Please contact me ASAP to get a class credit, and so I can make your spot available to someone on the wait-list ( most appreciated!).

I also teach this class in an online version . Dates: June 25, July 16, July 31, Aug 15, Sept 18.
Great for beginners and fiber-fanatics alike!
In this workshop, I'll be sharing a private handwork practice that I use as a mediation to sooth ruminating thoughts, doubts and feelings of inadequacy and depression; sewing coiled baskets out of upcycled fabrics and twines, string and rafia. In much of my practice as an artist, I am exploring craft and handwork as a form of innerwork, and conceptual exploration, rather than just a means to make a product.

The Process is what we'll be focusing on -- the spiraling around and around of the basket will be like a walking meditation through a labyrinth of our inner world, and tell the story of our lives through color, expressive stitching and experimentation.
Across cultures on every continent, the coiled basket has been both a humble tool for everyday survival and a rich culture-keeper of story and dreamwork, from Australian Aboriginal People, to Masai, to neolithic Celtic peoples, to Hopi and Navajo, to North Atlantic islanders, to Coast Salish makers born of the land we all now inhabit.
I began this meditative process by studying baskets called ciosans, made in the Scottish Highlands out of marran grass.

We’ll be using recycled fabrics diverted from the waste stream, considering our impact on the planet through our fast consumer choices, we'll be slowing way down to hand make a labor intensive basket.
Participants will be given a tapestry needle and can take home some string and recycled fibers to continue working with after class, and can continue this soothing practice infinitely using their own discarded clothes and whatever they find around them.
PLEASE READ FAQ BELOW BEFORE BOOKING.

The Garden Workshops are held in a small urban forest with towering heritage Douglas Fir trees, that create a cool and pleasant shade garden, even in the height of summer.
Workshops are held rain or shine, because there is a covered workshop and a festival tent.

As a Weaver, I have always understood that weaving is a living metaphor for the interconnectedness of human lives - we are all threaded together. Mandy Greer Studio is in a historic Black neighborhood, on occupied Duwamish land, and to pay homage to the liberation and contributions of BIPOC communities, I donate 10% of all profits to Real Rent Duwamish and also Africatown Land Trust.
