Join us for a casual morning of coffee and conversation as we explore Virginia MOCA’s current exhibition Where We Meet with Truly Matthews, Museum Deputy Director, Director of Education & Engagement and guest artists Jay Brown, JoAnn Dervay, Jeremy Meikle, Ed Obermeyer, and Dana Zumbrum.
Each featured artwork represents a different section of the exhibition, highlighting familiar scenes and shared experiences that connect us to place. Together, these artists capture the everyday beauty of Hampton Roads through imagery that feels grounded, recognizable, and personal.

Jay Brown is a photographer raised in the 757 with roots in Philadelphia. Shaped by noir sensibilities, his visual storytelling uses light and shadow to reveal what might otherwise be missed in the dark.
Ed Obermeyer is a painter and photographer whose work reflects a lifelong fascination with the patterns of nature and the movement of the ocean. A Virginia-based artist, surfer, and traveler, he combines realism and abstraction through intricate lines and layered patterns. His ocean photography captures the turbulence and beauty of waves from within the water itself, revealing his deep connection to the sea.
JoAnn Dervay first discovered photography in college in the 1970s, capturing local bands and theater productions before pursuing a career in medicine. Now retired, she has returned to photography with a focus on pattern, architecture, and street photography. She finds her muse in both big cities and her adopted hometown of Virginia Beach, uncovering beauty in familiar places.
Dana Zumbrum is a Virginia Beach–based artist and educator known for her vibrant paper collages that explore memory, place, and personal connection. Loud and bold, she channels that same energy into expressive compositions and unapologetically bright colors that celebrate overlooked places and everyday moments, believing every story deserves color.
Jeremy Meikle is a Virginia Beach–based artist who has spent his life surfing and building lifelong connections along the coast. Nine years ago, he began bending neon and went on to found True Love Neon, where he shares his passion for glass and gas with anyone willing to listen.
