For decades we have built in natural areas without careful consideration of how it affects wildlife. Instead, we could be factoring in how new development affects connectivity, be sure to provide safe wildlife crossings, and maintain a rich biodiversity to control insect and rodent populations. Coffee Creek Preserve provides a beautiful recreational greenspace for the public and adjacent housing development and a rich biodiversity for wildlife. Join the Harbor Country Hikers as Pat Fisher (President HCH) leads us through the preserve with a "show and tell" on the benefits of coexisting with nature. There are paved paths around a beautiful pond complimented with falls and fountain, creek, wetlands and open spaces for those who don’t get around as well. You’ll find plenty of places to stop and rest as you make your way around the pond.
Coffee Creek Preserve is a 157-acre complex of wetlands, woodlands, and prairie. More than 400 native plant species have been identified on the property. Coffee Creek is one of the healthiest streams in the southern Lake Michigan watershed. Salmon, trout, and many other fish swim in its waters. The Preserve is a magnet for outdoor enthusiasts. A system of trails, including a three-mile loop around the perimeter, is popular with hikers, joggers, cyclists, skiers, pet walkers, birders, fishermen and other nature lovers. An Amphitheater and Pavilion is available.
HCH has an All-Terrain Rollator which may be reserved for use on our hikes. Reservations are made by Emailing [email protected] on a first-come first-served basis. This will be a great hike to try our rollator.
Wear long pants (preferably tucked-in), a sun hat, sturdy shoes or boots and insect repellent and bring plenty of water. Light precipitation and hot or cold weather don’t ordinarily lead us to call off hikes, but health-threatening temperature extremes and lightning can be causes for cancellation. In case of inclement weather the day of the hike, check our website, harborcountryhikers.com, or our Facebook page for notice of cancellation or rescheduling.
