The UMass Fine Arts Center is thrilled to welcome American composer, pianist, bandleader, producer, and writer Vijay Iyer to Bowker Auditorium, Sunday, April 23, along with with violinist Hyeyung Sol Yoon and composer and educator Texu Kim.This event is co-presented by the Fine Arts Center’s arts and activism series Codemakers, the Asian and Asian American Arts and Culture Program, and the UMass Bach Festival.
The New York Times calls Iyer a “social conscience, multimedia collaborator, system builder, rhapsodist, historical thinker and multicultural gateway.”
Iyer’s recent album, "Love in Exile," created with Grammy award-winning vocalist Arooj Aftab and bassist Shahzad Ismaily, is “akin to visiting some sort of beautiful, strange sonic landscape made from strings, keys, and breath,” says Rolling Stone.
Recipient of a 2013 MacArthur Fellowship, a Doris Duke Performing Artist Award, a United States Artists Fellowship, a Grammy nomination, and the Alpert Award in the Arts, and voted Jazz Artist of the Year in the DownBeat magazine international critics’ polls in 2012, 2015, 2016 and 2018, Iyer has left an intergenerational mark in music in just a few, short decades.
Hyeyung Sol Yoon, a graduate of the Julliard School, is the founder of Asian Musical Voices of America, an organization devoted to community building and activism for change and creating spaces where stories can be shared by and for Asian diasporic musicians.
Texu Kim is a Korean-born American who writes music inspired by South Korea’s modern, multicultural nature.
This special event features works by Bach as well as contemporary music commissioned by the Fine Arts Center and performed by musicians of Asian descent.
Yoon will perform Kim's "Convivio," which explores Asian diasporic identity, as well as the adagio and fugue from Bach's C Major Violin Sonata. Vijay Iyer will perform solo works, including a new premiere. And all three artists will participate in a post-performance discussion.
Bring the whole family to experience Bach's music and legacy in powerful and new ways.
