For nearly four decades, Mark Felder has directed the MCCC College/Community Symphonic Band. He grew MCCC’s ensemble from just six members in 1982 into the powerhouse 100-member symphonic band heard today. Felder brought many distinguished soloists and guest artists to Monroe throughout the years, and he broke the traditional concert mold by introducing the Collage concept to MCCC and the community. Most recently, he began a five-year initiative commissioning original works by composers with Michigan roots. His influence has extended far beyond performances. Many of his former students have gone on to earn music degrees, direct school bands, perform in military ensembles and pursue professional music careers. Yet he has often said that what means the most to him are the countless individuals who continue to make music part of their lives regardless of their profession.
