Cocktails and Ideas: "Dark Humor in White Coats"
About this Event
📚 Lecture Topic: Dark Humor in White Coats: The Carnivalesque Language of Medicine
🎤 Speaker: Dr. Lisa Gabbert
Join us for a one-of-a-kind night out—cocktails, great conversation, and the chance to meet new people.
Hospitals run on precision and consequence. But underneath the charts and protocols, staff have always had another language that’s sharper, funnier, and never meant for the waiting room.
Folklorist Dr. Lisa Gabbert calls this the carnivalesque: the gallows humor, the slang, the inside jokes that let people working inside hierarchy and mortality talk back to both and survive twelve-hour shifts where the stakes are someone's life.
Gabbert's talk digs into what that unofficial language tells us about power, fear, and the defense mechanisms we lean on to cope with trauma, especially in critical situations.
Bring a friend or come solo! Get a drink, meet new people, and learn something new 🍸
