Clown in Improv!
A day of play, discovery and glorious failure for improvisers who want to connect with their inner clown and take their improv somewhere a little more surprising.
This playful, practical workshop introduces improvisers to the world of clown and explores how clowning techniques can transform the way you improvise.
We’ll begin by exploring the fundamentals of clown through games and exercises, and together will discover a new layer of possibility in our improv.
Topics covered by workshop
- How to be more present, vulnerable and responsive on stage
- Embrace failure and use it as fuel
- Connect directly with the audience
- Make simple choices, they're delightful!
- Opt for strong commitment
- Utilise genuine reactions to create surprising comedy
Pre-requisite
- Introduction to Improv (101) (or proof of equivalent)
- No previous clown experience is needed - just a willingness to play, be seen and occasionally make a spectacular mess of things!
Schedule:
- Morning session: warm-ups, exercises, clown basics
- Lunch break
- Afternoon session: applications for clown in improv

Your teacher:
Caroline Mathison is a professionally trained actor, clown and improviser from Edinburgh. She has performed at venues and festivals around the UK and Europe, undertaken additional training with legendary practitioners, and has been a core member of TBC Improv UK since 2011.
As a teacher and facilitator she values community and connection: fostering playfulness and creative expression in a friendly, supportive environment. Follow the fun and find the joy!
