The Bristol Clown School is delighted to be hosting theatre maker, performer & teacher, Peta Lily with her ground-breaking Clown and Dark Clown workshop.
"Fabulous journey, discovering emotion, comedy and more."
"Important, brave and powerful work."
"Practical, wide-ranging exercises to explore Clown and Dark Clown in a safe environment. I felt fearless."
"Jam-packed with technical gems to build on my clown stage presence."
THE WORKSHOP:
The Clown & Dark Clown course starts with learning Dark Clown at a basic level. In Clown mode, you'll focus on playfulness and expression, developing the comedy skills needed for Dark Clown. You'll learn the goals, principles, and values of this approach while having lots of fun. Dark Clown allows you to explore darker emotions and themes, enhancing your emotional range, timing, and audience awareness.
The Dark Clown Scenarios are where performance potential and play with the work come to life. Scenarios include: Competition Crying, Horror Is, Eco Horror, Body Horror, The Beloved, Consumer Guilt, For Her, Makeup Rabbits and more ...
HOW DARK CLOWN WORKS:
The skills of comedy craft can be employed to bring laughter and lightness to challenging subjects. Lily's Clown & Dark Clown work retains respect for the subject matter and provides a user-friendly way to represent Marginalised Emotions - creating an intriguing and enriching experience for performer and audience alike. Lily's unique approach makes widening the range of the clown's expression safe and invigorating.

WHO IS THIS FOR:
Almost anyone. Participants' background experience can vary – past participants include circus performers, improvisers, puppeteers, physical theatre practitioners, cabaret performers, comedians. Some have also been therapists, theatre directors, stage designers, writers, lawyers, IT consultants and once, a tree surgeon.
The work can be challenging. Peta Lily creates a safe container where the work and the necessary skills are introduced carefully and respectfully.
To support this, participants need to commit to being punctual and present for all hours of the course.
Also be aware the prime aim of the work is performance-based and not therapeutic and participants must take responsibility for their own well-being.
"Gave me the courage to engage with my clown state, and to use the skills it employs to step into darker, more complex comedy/drama territory."
Zoe Bouras, Theatre Maker
"Gives insights into dealing with serious and occasionally disturbing subjects – and delivering with humour."
Course Participant
"Dark Clown showed me how to find the comic rhythm in tragic feelings. The work explores the point where the deepest pain meets lunacy and eventually freedom. The course gave me a lot of new tools for my professional work as an actress."
Sandra Lange, Actress
