"Closing the Gap: A Roadmap for Improving Canada’s Wetland Greenhouse Gas Inventory"
Dr. Kelly Bona, Research Scientist, Pollutant, Inventory and Reporting Division of Environment and Climate Change Canada, Gatineau, QC, Canada
Robust national greenhouse gas (GHG) monitoring and reporting systems for wetland land-use change are critical for evidence-based climate change mitigation and adaptation policy development. A significant gap exists in Canada's national GHG inventory regarding industrial disturbance of boreal wetlands, primarily due to a lack of operational tools, maps, and emission factors. This presentation will highlight recent progress in addressing these deficiencies, specifically: (1) advancements in the Canadian Model for Peatlands, (2) the development of updated emission factors for industrial wetland disturbances, and (3) improved mapping of peat depth and extent within the Alberta oil sands region. Further, research priorities to address the remaining data gaps and refine methodologies in support of national wetland GHG reporting will be outlined.
