There are always at least two sides to every story.
In fiction, an unreliable narrator refers to the person telling the story who is not doing so in a complete, accurate, or truthful way. This could be due to their mental or psychic state, their own biases, or perhaps they are bending the truth for their own purposes.
In my solo show, I am telling a story that is filtered through my own perceptions and interpretation of the source material. I have not sought to depict any reality that has ever existed in a consensual or historic space. The sources of all these images are varied and completely unrelated to each other: found photos, family photos, and ephemera i have collected.
Using oils and acrylics I interpret colors and emotions from old photos; I add elements to amplify the narrative, and leave out details that may be lost to memory. I may or may not, be telling you the whole story. And leaving much up to you to decide.
Is an “unreliable narrator” an analogy for our times? You can decide.
