Program Purpose
Clinical judgment is the bread and butter of nursing practice. Because clinical judgment happens fluidly for nurses with experience, the process is often intuitive and invisible to them and to others. As a result, nurses new to the workforce may miss vital steps in the process. This workshop is designed to benefit experienced and novice nurses, including those who work with students in both the clinical and classroom setting. It is also designed for students themselves, in preparing to sit for the NCLEX® exam.
The workshop offers the opportunity for attendees to become familiar with and de-mystify the Next Generation NCLEX® standards and to bring them into the classroom and hospital. In addition to reviewing specific questions that guide one's clinical judgment, unfolding case studies grounded in teamwork and physiology for pre-eclamptic patients and postpartum hemorrhage patients will provide a forum for learning and sharing, answering clinical judgment questions that include, "Is it better to know 'what to do' or 'what not to do' when caring for a patient? How do we decide what to do first?" And more.
Topics:
Preparing for Next Generation NCLEX® test questions
As a result of this activity, participants should be able to utilize the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) clinical judgment framework to inform their practice.
COVID-19, the big, bad wolf. How does it affect pregnant and postpartum patients?
As a result of this activity, participants should be able to apply current evidence to their clinical judgment while caring for intrapartum and postpartum patients at risk for COVID-19.
Recognizing the three bears in postpartum hemorrhage responses
As a result of this activity, participants should be able to use evidence to examine their clinical judgment and postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) team responses through a postpartum hemorrhage patient case study and review of AWHONN recommendations.
What Hansel and Gretel's witch knew about diabetes and what she doesn't want us to know
As a result of this activity, participants should be able to translate the language of diabetes into metaphor to enhance their own understanding and extend it to patient education.
The emperor's new clothes are called Sepsis. Re-visiting the Maternal Early Warning Criteria to support calling it when you see it.
As a result of this activity, participants should be able to more confidently recognize sepsis and reduce delays in treatment when every minute counts.
