This course provides both foundational treatment protocols for common clinical conditions organized by Five Element pathology, and addresses the clinical challenges of managing multi-system cases where pathology spans multiple elements.

In part 1, Foundational Protocols, each element is presented as a complete yin-yang organ pair encompassing the most frequently encountered conditions in acupuncture practice. Conditions such as chronic fatigue and urinary tract infections (Water), digestive disorders and food sensitivities (Earth), headaches and menstrual irregularities (Wood), insomnia and circulatory disorders (Fire), and respiratory conditions, skin disorders, and IBS (Metal).

For each element, participants will learn diagnostic assessment using both TCM methods and relevant laboratory markers, and treatment protocols using herbal formulas, targeted nutritional supplementation, and acupuncture point prescriptions.

In part 2, Multi-System Treatment Strategies, participants will learn to manage advanced presentations requiring advanced diagnostic testing and multi-layered treatment strategies using herbal formulas, targeted supplementation, and acupuncture. They will address cases where initial interventions have plateaued, patients with multiple concurrent diagnoses, and clinical scenarios requiring advanced herbal modification and extraordinary vessel acupuncture strategies.

LEARN TO:

  1. Diagnose and classify patient presentations across the Five Elements, including both single-system and complex multi-system patterns, using yin–yang organ relationships and cycle dynamics (Generating, Controlling, Mother–Child).
  2. Develop and adapt herbal and supplement strategies for element-based patterns, including foundational formulas, advanced modifications, multi-element combinations, and management of treatment-resistant or evolving conditions.
  3. Design acupuncture treatment plans ranging from foundational to advanced approaches, integrating channel theory, Five Element principles, constitutional treatment, and multi-system coordination.
  4. Integrate laboratory markers into assessment and ongoing management to inform diagnosis, guide treatment priorities, and monitor clinical progress across element systems.
  5. Formulate comprehensive, phased treatment strategies for acute and chronic cases, including sequencing of interventions, management of complex multi-system involvement, and criteria for adjusting or escalating care.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:

Marc Ryan, L.Ac., Dipl. Ac. & Ch., Dipl. NBAO, is a licensed acupuncturist and herbalist specializing in Hashimoto's thyroiditis and autoimmune endocrine disorders. He is the author of two books published by Hay House: How to Heal Hashimoto's: An Integrative Road Map to Remission and The Hashimoto's Healing Diet. A graduate of Yo San University (M.S., Traditional Chinese Medicine, with honors) and Cornell University (B.F.A.), he holds additional certification in Chinese Herbology from Tao University.

He currently serves as clinical faculty at Yo San University, where he teaches laboratory diagnosis through his proprietary Five Element biomarker framework. His clinical practice integrates Traditional Chinese Medicine with functional medicine, with a focus on thyroid, autoimmune, and endocrine conditions. He has treated over 2,500 Hashimoto's patients and is currently conducting an IRB-approved research study correlating TCM diagnostic patterns with laboratory biomarkers.

His recent research combines analysis of 107 Hashimoto's patient laboratory panels with 458 in-depth patient surveys to map the specific mechanisms of multi-system dysfunction in autoimmune thyroid disease — an approach that integrates subjective patient experience with objective biomarker data in a way that has not previously been undertaken in the field.
