Climate change induced catastrophes are sweeping the northern hemisphere, displacing tens of millions in Pakistan, driving record heatwaves and drought from China to California. Communities on Australia's East coast are still in ruin from flooding with more expected this summer.

Meanwhile, the energy crisis has highlighted the dysfunctional state of our electricity system. Household energy bills are through the roof as a result of a market system that encourages profiteering by private electricity companies and continues to rely on expensive unreliable fossil fuels.
Albanese’s commitment to a 43% reduction in carbon emissions falls drastically short of what is needed to avert climate disaster. Much of the plan relies on a carbon trading market that has been exposed as a sham in recent months. And the rapid expansion of the gas industry across Australia will only intensify the climate crisis, without addressing rising costs of living for ordinary people.
While Albanese’s “Rewiring the Nation” plan is a positive step, there is no guarantee it will remain in public hands or lower power bills. And there is still no transition plan in place for our communities or the fossil fuel workforce.
Come along to this forum to discuss how we can fight for climate justice and an energy system that benefits the many, not the few.
Speakers:
Trevor Gauld - ETU National Policy Officer
Maddie Davey - Resident of flood-affected Lismore and conservation scientist.
