April’s CLEAT Series welcomes two Chicago artists presenting solo work, Teerath Majumder and Jaehoon Choi. Bangladeshi composer and sound artist Teerath Majumder presents an immersive audiovisual work that was born out of his recent experiments with tabla, electronics, spatialization, and audio-reactive projection and lights. With this project, Majumder continues pushing the boundaries of spatial sound art by utilizing the CLEAT system, allowing him the use of physical space for various synthesis techniques and effects processing. He unlocks new modes of expression through the tabla as it affects generative processes and visual components. Glimpses of his latest album "Dust to Dust" are sewn into the performance.Majumder's interdisciplinary work focuses on socio-sonic relationships mediated by technology. To facilitate audience participation, he developed novel interfaces and a software system featured in the 2022 production of "Space Within." His project with James Ilgenfritz titled Dysnomia investigates the agency of machines (instruments, regular objects, AI, etc.) in artistic expression. Their 2025 performance of "Do Not Feed the Robots" in Chicago featured a range of automatons and interactive objects. His compositions explore multimodal expression through intricate networks of mechanical instruments, digital processing, and dynamic visual tools. They have been performed by renowned ensembles such as Hub New Music, Transient Canvas, and London Firebird Orchestra among others.
Jaehoon Choi presents Brushing Improvisation – N°2, a semi-composed improvisation that translates the brush’s material subtleties into sound and explores its cultural perception as a foundation for musical form. The piece utilizes the Brushing Interface, a self-made musical instrument that captures the sound and movements of brushing gestures in real-time. The formulation of the piece came from my deep inter-relation with the instrument as a maker and performer, which my body acts as a central role in this creative process. This piece emphasizes the translation of the brush’s material subtleties and gestures into sonic expression through specific mediated technologies. Also, it explores the cultural perception of the brush, employing it as a structural element for musical improvisation. This dual focus fosters a seamless integration of theatricality, gestural performance, and the interplay between composition and improvisation. This piece was commissioned by and premiered at La Biennale di Venezia 2023 - 67th International Festival of Contemporary Music.
